What is Asthma?
Asthma is a lung condition most known for causing frequent bouts of wheezing and difficulty breathing. Asthma attacks occur when constriction in the muscles of the airway coincides with swelling in the lining of the air passage. This interaction limits the airflow coming in and out of the lungs, triggering an asthma attack.
Signs and Symptoms of Asthma
Asthma has a host of triggers and is usually caused by different factors depending on the individual. The majority of individuals experience asthma attacks due to allergies to pollutants, pollen, or other allergens like dust and mold. Respiratory infections, specific foods, and even stress can also trigger an asthma attack.
Common symptoms of an asthma attack include a tightness in the chest, wheezing, feeling short of breath, coughing, and dizziness due to lack of oxygen.
How the Upper Cervical Spine Affects Asthma
The upper cervical spine and the respiratory system are closely linked via the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the brain. Asthma patients who have a misalignment of the upper cervical spine may be experiencing irritation of the ANS, resulting in erratic or even disrupted electrical signals being communicated from the brain to the respiratory system. In turn, these irritations can make patients more susceptible to allergies and can even increase the frequency of allergy symptoms.
In turn, this culminates in more severe allergic reactions to potential asthma triggers, resulting in more frequent and more severe asthma attacks.
How Our Asthma Treatment Works
Living with asthma can prevent you from enjoying an outdoor lifestyle, but there are natural and effective treatment and symptom management options available through our upper cervical chiropractic specialist, Dr. Bello. Upper cervical chiropractic care is an advanced form of chiropractic treatment that focuses on using precise correction techniques to improve the health and function of the upper cervical spine.
When you visit our clinic for an upper cervical spinal assessment, Dr. Bello will perform an initial consultation to assess whether an upper cervical misalignment could be contributing to your asthma symptoms. In order to locate a misalignment, Dr. Bello will perform several specialized scans, using X-rays and cone-beam computed tomography.
Once the exact location of your spinal misalignment is determined, Dr. Bello will perform a series of non-invasive, low-force upper cervical corrections to coax the upper cervical spine back to its natural position.
If asthma is affecting your quality of life, Dr. Bello is here to help. Dr. Bello offers upper cervical chiropractic care to patients in Brentwood, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Westwood, Culver City, Marina Del Rey, West Los Angeles, and the surrounding areas.
