What is Bell’s Palsy?
Bell’s Palsy is a form of temporary facial paralysis resulting from damage or trauma to the facial nerves. Though the cause is often unknown, it is thought to be related to viral infections, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV), or pre-existing dysfunction in the nervous system and can occur at any age.
Signs and Symptoms of Bell’s Palsy
The symptoms of Bell’s Palsy can vary from mild to severe, and usually appear suddenly. The most common symptoms include paralysis or weakness on one side of the face, drooping of the eyelid and corner of the mouth, drooling, and loss of taste. Pain around the ear or jaw, and increased sensitivity to sound on the affected side are also common. In some cases, people with Bell’s Palsy may have difficulty eating or drinking, and may experience a change in their voice. The symptoms usually peak within 48 hours, and most people recover within 2 to 3 weeks.
How the Upper Cervical Affects Bell’s Palsy
The upper cervical spine is the topmost segment of the spinal column and plays a key role in supporting and protecting the connection between the spinal cord and brainstem. When an individual suffers a vertebral misalignment in this region of the spine, the ensuing build-up of inflammation and pressure can affect nerve flow between the brainstem and craniofacial nerves. Left untreated, this disruption can lead to misfiring, compression, or pinching of the seventh cranial nerve, potentially leading to the development of facial nerve disorders like Bell’s Palsy.
How Our Bell’s Palsy Treatment Works
The goal of our treatment is to remove any interference to the proper communication between the brain and body by correcting any misalignments in the upper cervical spine. At our clinic, this process is overseen by Dr. Bello, our very own in-house chiropractor.
An expert practitioner of the Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique, Dr. Bello uses a range of advanced diagnostic tools, such as cone-beam computed tomography scans and X-rays, to accurately locate and gently correct spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine. By targeting the affected vertebrae with precisely placed adjustments, Dr. Bello is able to alleviate the nerve pressure and inflammation that can lead to Bell’s Palsy, improving nerve function and promoting the body’s natural healing response.
